Brain Abscess: Definition, Cause, Symptoms and Treatment

What is Brain Abscess?

Brain abscess is an accumulation of pus in the brain. Usually has a pile of pus sheath, called kapsel. Piles may be single or located several places in the brain.

Brain abscess arises because there is an infection in the brain. The infection could have come from other parts of the body, spreading through the network directly or through a vein. Infection can also arise because there is a great impact on the head, for example, in a traffic accident.



Organisms Cause Brain Abscess

 
The bacteria that most often cause brain abscess is from the class of streptococci, most bacteria do not require oxygen in his life (anaerobic). Streptococci bacteria is often combined with other anaerobic bacteria such as Bacteroides, Propionibacterium, and Proteus. Some other bacteria also have the potential to cause brain abscess.

Mushrooms can also be a cause of brain abscess. Some types of fungi that contribute to the formation of pus, among others, candida, Mucor, and Aspergillus.


Clinical Symptoms

Clinical symptoms of brain abscess include headache, fever, vomiting, or decreased consciousness.

On physical examination, obtained a stiff neck, seizures, paralysis next to the body, as well as signs of increased pressure in the head.

Infection sometimes found in other body parts, such as the middle ear, mastoid bone, sinuses, lungs, or heart,
which is suspected as the source of the formation of pus.

Laboratory examination showed an increase in white blood cells and an increase in sedimentation rate (ESR).

Cerebrospinal fluid is taken through the waist vertebrae (lumbar puncture) showed that high pressure, the amount of protein that is more than normal, but the chloride and glucose levels are within normal limits.

At a scan head, looked a shadow of the low density, especially in the center of the shadow, and the visible rings depicting kapsel abscess.
 


Treatment

Giving antibiotics to eliminate the cause of the infection. Initially given intravenously followed by oral medication administration. Dexamethasone or mannitol can also be given to prevent swelling of the brain tissue. When this action for 1 week showed no change, usually surgery.
