Hyperhidrosis: Causes, Predisposing Factors, Signs, Symptoms and Handling Actions

Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweat secretion from eccrine glands and usually appears at the axilla and on the palms and soles of feet (generally begins at infancy or childhood).


Causes of Hyperhidrosis

  • Certain drugs such as antipyretic, emetic, meperidine (Demerol), and anticholinesterase
  • Sports and hot climate
  • Genetic factors 

Predisposing Factors


  • Cardiovascular disorders, such as shock and heart failure
  • Central nervous system disorders (most commonly the hypothalamic lesions)
  • Diabetes during hypoglycemic crisis
  • Graves Disease
  • Infectious and chronic diseases, such as tuberculosis, malaria, and lymphoma
  • Menopause
  • Pheochromocytoma
  • Termination of drugs or alcohol


Signs and Symptoms of Hyperhidrosis

  • Contact dermatitis from dye clothing
  • Sweat aksilar extreme
  • Sweat extreme feet
  • Sweat is very much in the palm of the hand

Handling Actions

  • 20% aluminum chloride in absolute ethanol reduces excessive perspiration 
  • Formaldehyde can also be used but can cause allergic contact sensitization. 
  • Glutaraldehyde induce contact sensitivity smaller than formaldehyde but can stain the skin. Glutaraldehyde is more often used in the legs than in the arms in the form of marinade or used directly several times a week and then every week as needed 
  • Anticholinergic except in patients with glaucoma or benign prostatic hyperplasia 
  • Disposal of axillary sweat glands locally or as a last resort servikotoraks or lumbar sympathectomy may be required for severe hyperhidrosis who are unresponsive to conservative therapy 
  • Lontoforesis water into the skin area involved can be achieved with tools that can be purchased by the patient.
